Well you were able to see my breakdown of the NFL Draft and my breakdown of the small school draft picks over the past 5 years, going back to 2008. Well now we are going to look at what players taken in these drafts have had the biggest impact. We will have a poll at the bottom of the page, so please make sure you vote on which player you think has had the biggest impact in the NFL.
2008 NFL Draft
Joe Flacco – QB – Delaware, This is simple, he should be the best pick on this page, so because of that, the question is going to be which small school player has been the best, besides Joe Flacco. I just wanted to add him so you could remember that Joe played in the CAA and was a stud for Delaware, before getting drafted by Baltimore in the first round. He has been very productive in B-More and is the leader of that Ravens Offense.
Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie – CB- Tennessee State, DRC has been a decent corner in the league. He was drafted in the first round by the Cardinals but was traded last year to the Eagles. He is in the last year of his contract but don’t be surprised for the Eagles to keep him around. He has great hands and is extremely fast.
Jerome Simpson – WR – Coastal Carolina, This is one of the biggest deep threat wide receivers in the game. When he is not getting in trouble off the field, he is a very good receiver. He is a long receiver who can get in the end zone. He is now on the Vikings roster, and had a huge flipping touchdown last year with the Bengals.
Brandon Carr - CB - Grand Valley State, Since I am not using Joe Flacco in the poll, I had to add another small schooler and how can you not add Carr. Carr has been a stud at cornerback. This year he was the hottest cornerback on the market and he went to the cornerback hungry Dallas Cowboys and got PAID. Carr started every game since his rookie year.
2009 NFL Draft
Ladarius Webb – CB – Nicholls State, Webb has become one of the best Punt Returners in the game and has been a very good cornerback for the Ravens. Webb continues to get in the face of his opponents and causes tons of problems for the opposition. He has good hands and is very good in zone coverage.
Johnny Knox – WR – Abilene Christian, Knox might be a person that gets cut this offseason, but he has been a very reliable slot receiver before for the Bears. He is a good player who can run pristine routes, his problem is, health. He has been having problems with his health and will need to stay healthy to be an asset on the field.
Bernard Scott – RB – Abilene Christian, Scott is a good third down back, and did a great job for the Bengals. He seems to find the end zone and does a great job at extending a play with his feet. He keeps his legs going, and is a pretty strong kid.
2010 NFL Draft
Andre Roberts – WR – Citadel, Roberts came on last year for the Cardinals, and had to do it with his QB who is also on this list. Both Roberts and Fordham’s own John Skelton made the list because both of them are good players who had great college careers.
Marc Mariani – WR – Montana, if this kid wasn’t a steal for the Titans, I don’t know what a steal is. Mariani came out of nowhere and did a great job for the Tennessee offense. He has good hands, and is good on Special Teams. He could be a huge asset for them this year.
John Skelton – QB – Fordham, Skelton is a big kid, with a strong arm. He did pretty well for the Cardinals last season. He was forced to play after injuries plagued the other quarterbacks on the roster. Skelton didn’t hide from the competition he took it by the hand and did his best with the Cardinals offense last year.
2011 NFL Draft
Ben Ijalana – OT – Villanova, If Ijalana can stay healthy he could be huge in the upbringing of Andrew Luck in Indianapolis. Ijalana has good lateral movement and is a big, strong kid. I can see him manning the position this year, and could be a huge steal for the Colts.
Taiwan Jones – RB – Eastern Washington – I like this kid in Oakland. He is a change of pace back, which can do it all. If D-Mac gets hurt, Jones can come in right away and take control. He was used last year in situational play and did a great job.
Justin Rogers – CB/KR – Richmond – Buffalo might have found a diamond in the rough with Justin Rogers. He was a very small kid, but last year when Buffalo put him at Kick Returner he exploded for a couple huge returns. He was getting long return after long return, and was even an asset for the Bills as a nickel corner when the injury bug hit Buffalo.
-I didn’t think it was right to put a small school list together for this year's draft until we see what they do. But make sure you vote on which player has had the most impact besides Joe Flacco below.
