As NESN reports, the Boston Red Sox have purchased outfielder Scott Podsednik from the Philadelphia Phillies. The Red Sox, as you know, have not been particularly good this season, and one of their (many) problems has been a lack of production from their outfielders. Will Podsednik save the Sox? NESN:

While it's unclear whether Podsednik will join the Red Sox or remain in the minor leagues, the speedster will help shore up an outfield looking for help while Jacoby Ellsbury and Carl Crawford continue to work their way back from injuries. Podsednik signed a minor league deal with the Phillies last year, but injuries limited him to only 14 games in 2011.

He did play 14 games for the Phillies, sort of; he played 14 games for their triple-A affiliate. After getting beat out for a roster spot this spring by Juan Pierre, Podsednik got handed a return ticket to Lehigh Valley, and accepted it. He's not exactly thrived in the International League so far, batting .203 in 22 games.

He'll probably get plenty of time to improve his numbers, though, because -- as Over the Monster's Marc Normandin writes -- there probably won't be any room on the Red Sox' 25-man roster unless the club's terrible injury problems become even more terrible.
