memorial day memories
In honor of Memorial Day, SB Nation asked current and former members of the Armed Forces to share their most lasting sports memories from their deployments. Their responses are humbling, and inspiring.
The sports calendar is full this holiday weekend -- the Indianapolis 500, UFC 146, the NBA and Stanley Cup playoffs, baseball, and more -- and thousands of fans will either miss the games or watch them from the other side of the world: on Navy ships underway, or in dusty camps where the war is supposed to be over.
In honor of Memorial Day, SB Nation asked veterans to share their most lasting sports memories from their deployments. The responses varied widely: watching USA's dramatic World Cup victory over Algeria; an NCAA championship with bragging rights on the line; playing foosball with Iraqi children; a sports-rich patrol base; and the Super Bowl that didn't happen. Those memories are woven into a larger experience that proved dangerous for all, and fatal for many. This video is for the fallen, and for those who remember them.
