The 2012 Belmont Stakes is usually the final major horse race fans pay attention to in any year: it comes right at the beginning of summer and completes the Triple Crown series of races for three-year-olds. But all that often means that fans don't care too much.
This year, with 2012 Kentucky Derby and 2012 Preakness winner I'll Have Another mounting a strong challenge for the first Triple Crown since Affirmed won it in 1978, you can bet eyes will be glued to TV sets on June 9.
The 144th running of the Belmont Stakes will feature the 12th attempt to win a Triple Crown by a horse that took the first two legs of the challenge since Affirmed and the first since Big Brown came into the race undefeated in 2008.
I'll Have Another's biggest bit of luck heading into the Belmont is that Bodemeister, the first horse to place second to a horse that won the first two Triple Crown races since Alydar lost his duels with Affirmed, will not run in the race.
