Way back in March -- the last day in March, but March is March -- Kansas City's Yuniesky Betancourt injured his right ankle while batting. The injury wasn't serious enough to keep him from winning a spot on the Royals' 25-man roster, or serious enough to keep him from playing second base most days, or serious enough to keep him from posting a 109 OPS+, far better than anything he's ever done before.
However, apparently Betancourt's ankle never really healed up, and now it's serious enough to force him to the Disabled List. There's a silver lining in this cloud, however ... While Chris Getz will get almost all of the playing time at second base, the Royals have called up 28-year-old Irving Falu from the minors to fill Betancourt's roster spot. Falu's been in the organization since 2003, and spent all of the last three seasons with triple-A Omaha. He can't really hit and doesn't figure to be in the majors for long. But his first hit should be a memorable thing. Which is nice.
