Samantha Steele Mixes Up Spelling Bee Finalists

This really wasn't the way to stick the dismount. After the Scripps National Spelling Bee was all said and done, the only thing left to do was put a nice bow on things by interviewing the winner. It did not work out so well.

To recap: Snighda Nadipati correctly spelled "guetapens" to take home the victory, the confetti flew and all was well. Unfortunately, Samantha Steele made quite the gaffe near the end of the broadcast.

She had the name correct, but mixed up the two competitors, leading to one awkward moment.

To Steele's credit, she did recover -- probably as well as one could expect. But it was still ... well, it was just bad. One of those cringe-worthy moments that took place at exactly the wrong time on national television.

In other news, we're still convinced Gifton got jobbed and Lena's minor misstep that cost her the title was heartbreaking.
