The former Angels outfielder, released a week ago by the AL West club, will stay in southern California to play this season with the Dodgers.

Outfielder/designated hitter Bobby Abreu, who has played the last three seasons in Anaheim before his release by the Los Angeles Angels last week, doesn't have to pack up and move as he signs with a new team on Friday:

Abreu, who used to be a pretty good outfielder, would probably have been better served signing with an AL team where he could DH much of the time, but there apparently wasn't any interest from such a team. So Abreu instead will stay in the Los Angeles area, where he's been productive for the Angels for the last three seasons.

With Matt Kemp and Andre Ethier well-ensconced in the Dodger outfield, Abreu will battle Tony Gwynn Jr., Jerry Hairston Jr. and Juan Rivera (not Jr.) for playing time, most likely in left field. Abreu hit .208/.259/.333 with five RBI in eight games for the Angels before his release.
