Indians Purchase Pitcher Esmil Rogers From Rockies

Yeah, straight cash deal.

According to the Rockies, they've "traded" right-handed pitcher Esmil Rogers for "cash considerations".

Have you ever wondered about that? For one thing, what's the difference between "cash considerations" and "cash"? For another, why not just say you've sold the guy. That's what teams used to say. Have we become so sensitive, so lily-livered that the word "sold" has become a dirty word?

Well, it's true that selling a human being does seem a bit distasteful. Technically, you're not selling the player at all. Rather, you're selling his contract. Esmil Rogers was under contract to pitch for the Colorado Rockies, and now he's under contract to pitch for the Cleveland Indians.

Another thing we might wonder: Why would the Cleveland Indians want Esmil Rogers to pitch for them?

His ERA's with the Rockies in the last three seasons, 2010-2012:

6.13
7.05
8.06

A neat linear progression. In the wrong direction. He's also got 145 career innings in Class AAA, with a 6.53 ERA.

Man, this guy just can't catch a break.
