On Monday night, the Arizona Wildcats became the 2012 NCAA champions as they defeated the South Carolina Gamecocks by a final score of 4-1. The win was the second straight for the Wildcats over the Gamecocks, securing the two-game sweep of the Championship Finals.

The game provided no shortage of drama, as the two teams entered the ninth inning with the score tied 1-1. Brandon Dixon put Arizona ahead with an RBI double in the top of the ninth as part of a three-run Wildcats rally. The game was far from in the bag, though, as Arizona reliever Matthew Troupe loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the ninth. South Carolina seemed to be on the verge of a walk-off win to even up the series, but a line drive up the middle was snared by second baseman Trent Gilbert and nearly turned into a game-ending double play. A fly ball later and the Wildcats stood alone in Omaha as the winners of the 2012 College World Series.

The victory marks the first national championship for Arizona's baseball team since 1986.
