Rockies Reassign Pitching Coach Bob Apodaca

The Colorado Rockies featured a miserable pitching staff under pitching coach Bob Apodaca, and now they'll try to feature a less miserable pitching staff under somebody else.

The Colorado Rockies are rather famously experimenting with a four-man starting rotation and low pitch-count ceilings. They're doing this in large part out of desperation, because their pitchers have been horrible. It does them no favors, of course, to have to pitch half the time in Coors Field, but Coors Field isn't at the root of the trouble. The Rockies, as expected, have allowed the highest OPS in baseball at home. They've allowed the second-highest OPS in baseball on the road. The Rockies' pitchers have had issues.

So they're getting a new pitching coach. By the original pitching coach's request! Via USA Today:

The Colorado Rockies, who have the worst-ranked pitching staff in the major leagues, reassigned pitching coach Bob Apodoca on Tuesday before their game against the Washington Nationals.

Apodaca, the Rockies' pitching coach for the last 10 years, requested the reassignment, Rockies general manager Dan O'Dowd told USA TODAY Sports.

It would make sense if Apodaca didn't want to have to deal with the reality of Coors Field any longer. And it would make sense if the Rockies wanted to seek out a different, fresher voice. That's a big part of the majority of coaching staff turnover. Even if a guy's perfectly adequate, over time he just starts to lose his effectiveness. The Rockies have made a big change, so they might as well make more changes until something, anything goes right.
