Reports out of Miami today are suggesting that the eighth overall pick of the 2012 draft, Ryan Tannehill is 'not in the running' for the Miami Dolphins starting quarterback job. Brian Biggane of the Palm Beach Post is reporting that David Garrard and Matt Moore are both currently ahead of the rookie in the race for the starting quarterback position.
Now this may not be surprising to a lot of you; after all, Tannehill was widely seen as a project who could use with a year holding the clipboard to develop before seeing the field. But I'd still be concerned if I was a Dolphins fan. They used a very high pick on him, and while he may not have been expected to start this year, to not be in the running for the job is worrying.
One of Biggane's quotes is particularly alarming, which you can see after the jump.
"he's not in the running right now due to his untimely mistakes, particularly when throwing into traffic. Coach Joe Philbin and his staff have made it clear that turnovers will not be tolerated, so for now at least Tannehill will continue his apprenticeship as the No. 3 guy."
Now granted, it's only early July. But when the eighth overall pick is a number three guy and making "untimely mistakes", you have to question the value of that pick. There were certainly other players available who could be penciled in as a week one starter for the Dolphins right now.
What are your thought's on this situation? Did the Dolphins reach for Tannehill and are already regretting it? Or are they simply taking their time to develop him, knowing it will help him in the future? Let us know in the comments section below.
