Ian Desmond is headed to the disabled list after Washington Nationals manager Davey Johnson announced that the shortstop had a torn oblique following Sunday's win over the Atlanta Braves. Desmond has been battling an oblique strain for much of the season, and will get some time off to hopefully recover for good.
RT @masnKerr: Desmond to DL with oblique tear from MRI accord to Davey— federalbaseball (@federalbaseball) July 22, 2012
Desmond sat out Sunday's game after playing 16 innings during Saturday's doubleheader. He went just 1-for-7 on the day. Desmond is hitting .286 on the year with 17 home runs and 54 RBIs, and was named to is first All-Star Game this past month. There is no word yet just how long the DL stint will last.
