Giancarlo Stanton will not be participating in this year's Home Run Derby. The Marlins star will be heading to the DL as he prepares for knee surgery.

The National League All-Star team has suffered another loss but, more importantly, the Miami Marlins have lost one of their most integral components for at least the next month. Giancarlo Stanton left Saturday's game against the St. Louis Cardinals after two innings and is now heading back to Miami for knee surgery.

Stanton has known since Tuesday that he has "loose bodies" in his right knee, which may either be bone or cartilage fragments, according to MLB.com beat reporter Joe Frisaro. Stanton hoped to play through the discomfort and singled in the second inning of Saturday's game, but was lifted for a pinch-hitter in the top of the third. Frisaro later confirmed that Stanton was returning to Miami for surgery.

Tom Green of MLB.tv reports that, per Marlins manager Ozzie Guillen, Stanton is expected to be out four to six weeks. It appears Matt Kemp will need to find a new, last-minute replacement for Stanton in the Home Run Derby.
