Texans Struggling In The Red Zone

Stay connected with SB Nation

The Houston Texans may want to practice their red zone work when training camp continues following their Saturday night game against the Carolina Panthers. Twice the Texans made it inside the five-yard line only to settle for field goals.

On the first Houston drive of the game, Matt Schaub and Ben Tate helped march the Texans from their own 33-yard line all the way down to the Panthers' two-yard line. Tate was stopped for no gain, and Schaub threw an incomplete pass on third down.

In the second quarter, T.J. Yates - 'memba him? - took the Texans from their 29-yard line to the Panthers' three-yard line. He threw an incomplete pass as well, leaving Houston to settle for three points and a 13-6 lead.

All of this comes with the usual preseason football caveat, when players are not quite at their best.

Rookie defensive end Whitney Mercilus picked up a sack, shaking off a blocker to bring down Derek Anderson.
