Chelsea Vs. Manchester City, 2012 Community Shield: Halftime Score, 1-0 Blues On Fernando Torres Goal

Chelsea started their first team in the Community Shield, while Manchester City are missing a few key figures and started an experimental lineup. Even though the match was a bit dull for most of the first half, City were eventually made to pay for their odd lineup and missing stars with a goal by Fernando Torres. The Euro 2012 Golden Boot winner (*snicker*) put his team up late in the half, but Chelsea has a lot of work to do. Branislav Ivanovic was sent off just two minutes after the goal, and Chelsea will have to defend their 1-0 lead with 10 men.

There was a very distinct lack of action until Torres' goal. Petr Cech had to make a save on Carlos Tevez in the opening minutes and Stefan Savic picked up an 11th minute yellow card that might come into play later. Besides Torres getting kicked in the face, the most eventful happening of the first 40 minutes was £32m signing Eden Hazard looking less than skillful while trying to beat Nigel De Jong in the 20th minute.

Torres goal came in the 40th minute and was set up by Ramires with a lovely assist. The Brazilian winger surged towards the penalty area and poked the ball into the path of Torres, through Juan Mata's missed touch/dummy, and Torres applied the kind of finish that we haven't seen very much of since he wore a red shirt and played in Merseyside.

Chelsea's fans were jubilant at the fantastic finish and their lead, but their joy was short lived. Two minutes later, Branislav Ivanovic went lunging into a tackle on Aleksandar Kolarov and was shown a straight red card. It was a foul for sure and probably a yellow card, but referee Kevin Friend was very harsh to show Ivanovic a straight red for this tackle.

The Chelsea fans don't appear to outnumber the City fans in the stands, but the City fans don't exactly have anything to cheer or complain about at the moment. On the other hand, Chelsea's fans were extremely upset with the call and were audibly booing Friend mercilessly as he walked towards the tunnel. Chelsea lead 1-0 at the half, but won't have much fun trying to keep that lead.
