The New York Yankees have agreed to a contract with former Indians starter Derek Lowe.

The New York Yankees have agreed to a contract with right-handed pitcher Derek Lowe, the team announced Saturday. The move will not be made official until Monday, at which point Lowe will join the Yankees' bullpen after 21 starts with the Indians..

David Phelps is expected to start Monday against the Texas Rangers, according to Pinstripe Alley, taking CC Sabathia's spot in the rotation.

With Sabathia headed to the 15-day disabled list, the Yankees had room available to help bolster their pitching staff. Lowe was designated for assignment by the Cleveland Indians on Aug. 1, and cleared waivers Friday to become a free agent.

Lowe started the season 6-1 before going 2-9 over his last 11 starts with a 8.28 ERA. He could be very effective coming out of the pen, however. According to the Newark Star-Ledger's Marc Carig, the Yankees believe that the sinkerballing Lowe can generate enough grounders and throw enough strikes to produce.
