After a scorching opening, the juggernaut that was the Bayern Munich attack cooled off a bit. The match remains 2-0 in favor of Bayern after the early goals from Mario Mandzukic and Thomas Müller.
Both teams are missing several key players due to injuries, but the absolute collapse of the Borussia Dortmund midfield without Sven Bender and Sebastian Kehl was not expected. Moritz Leitner and Ilkay Gundogan are solid players, but they are usually paired with one of the two missing players when they see the pitch. They are being completely run over by Toni Kroos and Luiz Gustavo. With Kehl and Bender unavailable due to their injuries, it will be interesting to see what BVB do to find a solution.
Everything is coming up roses early for Bayern. Jupp Heynckes took a risk starting Emre Can at left back, but the Dortmund attack haven't been able to expose him. The young midfielder played well in the first half as a fill in due to the three missing fullbacks.
The interplay up top between Mandzukic, Müller, Arjen Robben, and Franck Ribery has been impressive so far. Many of the attacks are coming through the middle before kicking out wide, and the BVB defense hasn't been able to adjust to properly handle.
While the Supercup is a trophy, it's still a glorified friendly, so it will be interesting to see what substitutions are made at the half. Yours truly selfishly wants to see Mario Götze and Xherdan Shaqiri on the pitch soon.
