Dodgers' Hairston Hits D.L. With Hip Injury

Of course, we have to specify which Hairston because there are two of them. There's Scott Hairston, the nine-year journeyman who's lately been plying his trade with the New York Metropolitans. And of course there's his big brother, Jerry Jr., the 15-year veteran now with the Dodgers, his ninth team.

You might think of Jerry as a utility player, and you would be right. But this season, only seven Dodgers have more plate appearances than Jerry, and only three Dodgers have higher OPS+'s than Hairston's 102.

Hey, that's a problem! The Dodgers are vying for a postseason berth, and the only currently active Dodgers who have been better than league-average hitters this season are A.J. Ellis, Matt Kemp, Andre Ethier, and Hanley Ramirez.

Anyway, Hairston -- who's started at least a dozen games this season at second base, third base, and left field -- is going on the 15-day Disabled List with an "inflamed hip", which probably isn't as terrible as it sounds but still doesn't sound like much fun. To replace him, the Dodgers are calling up 27-year-old rookie Elia Herrera, who's already gotten into 51 games earlier this season with the big club.
