San Diego Chargers tackle Garrett Brown has been suspended four games by the NFL for violating the league's performance-enhancing substance policy.

San Diego Chargers defensive tackle Garrett Brown was suspended on Thursday for violating the NFL's performance-enhancing substance policy, the league announced.

Brown's four-game suspension without pay will be enforced during the regular season. The 6-foot-2, 300-pound tackle is still eligible to play in the preseason, but he won't be able to return in the regular season until Oct. 1. That will only happen if Brown makes the Chargers' final roster, which is not guaranteed at this point.

Brown has yet to appear in an NFL game since coming out of the University of Minnesota. The 2010 undrafted nose tackle appeared in four preseason games after signing with the Kansas City Chiefs, and he recorded only one tackle.

The 23-year-old from New Haven, Conn. was signed by the Chargers this May after impressing San Diego scouts at a Yale football pro day, according to the New Haven Register. Now, it appears Brown's second shot in the NFL is in jeopardy.
