The injury occurred during the fifth inning of Kansas City's game against the Chicago White Sox. Getz was hit on the thumb by a pitch as he squared around to bunt. Tony Abreu took over at second base in the next half inning with Mike Moustakas replacing Getz in the lineup.
While nothing is official, it's likely the injury will force Getz to the disabled list. Getz is hitting .275 this season in 63 games for the Royals. The 28-year-old has started 54 games at second base, splitting the starting job with Yuniesky Betancourt.
Getz took over as the full-time starter when the Royals designated Betancourt for assignment. The job will now likely fall to Abreu, who was called up from Triple-A on August 5. If Getz does land on the disabled list, it would be his third trip to the DL this season.
