Mike Leach sent a text to Texas A&M OC Kliff Kingsbury shortly after Kevin Sumlin hired him. The message: Don't you dare be scared of the SEC.
It's pretty much par for the course with Leach, but funny nonetheless.
From Chuck Carlton of the Dallas Morning News:
The text message arrived just after Kingsbury was hired by Kevin Sumlin and was striking for its brevity and sentiment.
"You better not be scared of the SEC," it read.
The sender? Mike Leach, Kingsbury's old coach at Texas Tech who proved the spread could be effective in the SEC as Kentucky's offensive coordinator in 1997 and '98. In the text and subsequent conversations, he's conveyed the same sentiment to Kingsbury.
It shouldn't be surprising at all. Leach really isn't scared of anything and has supreme confidence in his own system. Kingsbury takes on a lot of the same traits as Leach, both in personality and the system he runs.
Still funny to picture Leach texting other coaches words of wisdom during the offseason, though.
