Stan Van Gundy: Magic President Alex Martins 'Has No Sports Knowledge'

Stay connected with SB Nation

There was some thought that former Orlando Magic coach Stan Van Gundy would fade quietly into the background during his expected year off from coaching. Yeah, so much for that.

When Van Gundy was fired in May, Magic CEO Alex Martins implied that Van Gundy could not relate to his players. Van Gundy's response to that was swift and harsh. Via an interview on 740 The Game, transcribed by the Orlando Sentinel:

"It’s a typical lack of understanding from someone who has no sports knowledge, who has never coached or played, who has never been in a lockeroom….it’s a naivete," Van Gundy said of Martins Monday morning on Mike Bianchi’s show on 740 AM.

Van Gundy has a point: most of the Magic players not named Dwight Howard have publicly come out and supported him. As for Howard, Van Gundy chortled that Martins' comments made it seem like "somehow," it was important for Howard to like Van Gundy. It probably is, to be honest, but Van Gundy was rolling at that point.

Let this be a lesson to any of Van Gundy's future employers: fire him at your own risk.
