Chad Gustavson received a bit of a shock on Thursday. Roused from an afternoon nap by "about 45 seconds" of persistent banging on his front door, Gustavson made his way downstairs to see what the fuss was about. When he opened the door, he found himself looking at Los Angeles Lakers star Pau Gasol, who stooped down to look inside the house. "Hullo," said Gasol. "I am here for UNICEF. They send me to visit Chad."
Gustavson invited Gasol in and offered him some Diet Squirt and Ritz crackers. Gasol was gracious, eating his snack at Gustavson's small table as they two fumbled through small talk for 15 minutes or so. "This is a nice place," said Gasol, looking around. "Not as nice as when they send me to visit Jordan, but still."
Gustavson nodded, still confused. About half an hour into Gasol's visit, he received a phone call from his UNICEF handler. This was Gasol's end of the conversation, as best as Gustavson could remember.
"Hello? Yes, I'm here! What? In the kitchen. Chad's kitchen. Huh? You told me to visit Chad, man. I looked him up in the phone book. What? In the phone book. Country? What? Oh. [long pause] OOOOHHHHHH. That makes more sense. Uh-huh. Okay, be right there."
Gasol apologized politely to Gustavson for the mix-up. Gustavson described the Lakers forward as "very pleasant" and that he was eventually able to return to his nap with little difficulty.
