Notre Dame has suspended starting running back Cierre Wood for its season opener against Navy.
Notre Dame running back Cierre Wood was suspended by Notre Dame for their season opener against Navy on Sept. 1. Wood is the third player suspended by the Fighting Irish and his suspension may not be limited to just one game.
It's unclear why he's being suspended, and Notre Dame is being quiet.
Wood led Notre Dame in rushing last season, piling up more than 1,100 yards. He was expected to split some time in the backfield this season with Theo Riddick and George Atkinson. Riddick will likely take Wood's place as starter against Navy.
A senior, Wood was recruited to South Bend by Charlie Weis and is one of the few remaining holdovers recruited by that staff. The Irish seem to be prepared for the suspension as they have done their best at working Riddick and Atkinson into the mix during the preseason. Wood took some snaps with the first team offense but has shared that role with the others throughout practice.
