Blue Jays' 1st-Round Pick Suspended For 50 Games

Tuesday, Major League Baseball announced 50-game suspensions for three minor-league players who failed drug tests.

The most notable of the suspended players is Blue Jays relief-pitching prospect Marcus Stroman, their first-round pick in last June's amateur draft. In 15 minor-league games since signing with the Jays, Stroman's posted a 3.26 ERA with 23 strikeouts in 19 innings.

In the wake of that news, Stroman released this statement:

Despite taking precautions to avoid violating the minor league testing program, I unknowingly ingested a banned stimulant that was in an over-the-counter supplement. Nonetheless, I accept full responsibility and I want to apologize to the Toronto Blue Jays organization, my family, my teammates, and the Blue Jays fans everywhere. I look forward to putting this behind me and rejoining my teammates.

Stroman wasn't the only one, though. Rays outfielder Josh Sale and Royals first baseman Mark Donato, both of them in low Class A, have drawn 50-game suspensions.
