Juventus great Alessandro Del Piero will join A-League club Sydney FC.
Alessandro Del Piero has found his post-Juventus home, but it is not at a club that anyone expected, or one that many people have heard of. The Italian great has agreed to sign with Sydney FC in the A-League, the club announced on Friday. Sydney FC officials will fly to Italy in the coming days to finalize the deal.
"This is huge for Sydney FC, huge for the A-League and huge for Australian football," Dyney FC chairman Scott Barlow said. "We feel honoured that Alessandro has decided to play for Sydney FC and we share his excitement that a move to Sydney FC will create a lasting legacy for football in this country."
Del Piero spent 19 years with Juventus, but his deal expired after last season and the club chose not to renew it as the 37-year-old saw his role in the team diminish. He did say after last season that he would not retire, but most people expected him to move to MLS or Qatar, not Australia.
Seeing Del Piero in any shirt except the Juventus black and white was always going to be odd, but seeing him in a Sydney FC shirt? That's going to be shocking.
