Five defensive rookies to pick up in Fantasy Football

Buffalo Bills corner back Stephon Gilmore (27) breaks up a pass against wide receiver T.J. Graham (11) during organized team activities at the Ralph Wilson Field House. Could either one of these guys be an option in a IDP fantasy draft? Find out here

Usually you want to stay away from rookies in Fantasy Football, but this year there are several young guys that I believe are going to come in and contribute right away, and might be a very good option for you in any league, but since I am running an IDP league here at Mocking The Draft, I believed I had to add some defensive guys to check out as well. So check out the defensive rookies that I expect to come in and contribute right away, which could all be great options in your league after the jump.

Luke Kuechly, LB, Carolina Panthers – Kuechly is a tackling machine and will be a pretty decent defense. He will be a guy that comes in right away and makes an impact. If you play in an IDP league, Kuechly is a great option because he is so talented and will get tons of tackles. I think you will enjoy having this guy on your team. He should get tons of tackles this year and could be as high as 10 on the tackler leader board. He has always had a nose for the ball, and I think he will be a steal for you in the mid part of the draft.

Stephon Gilmore, CB, Buffalo Bills – Gilmore is already penciled in to be a starter in Buffalo, who was torched last year by the opposing teams passing attack. Gilmore is a very physical corner who is going to demand respect. He has been doing a great job already in camp and has been truly impressive. With the Bills having a rushing duo now with Mario Williams and Mark Anderson, the pressure will force quarterbacks to make mistakes. Gilmore could be poised for a huge rookie campaign.

Courtney Upshaw, OLB, Baltimore Ravens – Upshaw is already mad at everyone that passed on him, now add in to the equation that Terrell Suggs will not be playing? Upshaw will still be competing for a starting job, but if he can beat out Pernell McGhee watch out, this could be the biggest steal of the draft. Upshaw could be a guy that comes in right away and blows up the opposing teams offenses. He has always been a force on the field and I think it will be pretty fun to see him take out his anger on everyone around him.

Janoris Jenkins, CB, St. Louis Rams Jenkins is another guy that has tons to prove, because he was the talk leading up to the NFL Draft, about how his children affected his draft stock? I still don’t get it but his play is crazy good. So if you are looking for a guy that can get you some interceptions and pass break ups, this is your guy. Jenkins will be a good late round option because he should be on the field right away even at the nickel position and kick/punt returns. Jenkins could have a Patrick Peterson type of year from last year.

Josh Norman, CB, Carolina Panthers – I know you are wondering why a 5th rounder is on my list, but this kid is amazing. He has been killing the competition already since day one in Carolina. He has already been taking first team reps lining up on the Right side. Norman is not afraid to jump a route and will hit you hard if you try to come across the middle. He has the size of a safety but is a talented CB. In deep leagues if you need a cornerback this could be a great steal for you.
