Team USA seemed to either play amazing or awful in the first quarter of their pool play games at the 2012 London Olympics, but they were expected to learn from their mistakes and play a more steady brand of basketball now that the knockout round's begun.
That wasn't exactly the case in the first quarter of Wednesday afternoon's game against the Australian national team, however, as Team USA was genuinely challenged through spurts of the first quarter before ending up with a 28-21 lead following a choppy first ten minutes of play.
Kevin Durant looked like he might go off after a pair of long 3-pointers, but those ended up being his only points of the first quarter -- though he still leads a balanced Team USA with six points. Despite Durant's big threes, it was the passing ability of LeBron James that took center stage in the first quarter as he finished with two points, three assists and six rebounds as he continues to fill up the box score.
Australia was led by Patty Mills with 10 points in the first quarter, but his teammates weren't able to step up enough to keep Australia too close.
