Michael Vick gave fans a scare on Thursday night when he left the Philadelphia Eagles' preseason opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers after suffering a thumb injury in the first quarter. It appears that the quarterback will be okay, however. Vick is reportedly expected to practice Saturday.
Vick sustained the injury after his throwing hand landed on the helmet of center Jason Kelce during a pass attempt. Vick never left the Eagles' sideline for more extensive medical treatment, however, and X-rays taken of the thumb that evening came back negative.
On the face of the story, it does not appear that Vick's long-term status is any jeopardy. It will be interesting to see how the team handles him for the rest of preseason, however. No one would blame the Eagles for being extra cautious with what is arguably their most indispensable player.

Michael Vick did the one thing no NFL team wants to see their quarterback do, especially in the preseason -- get injured. Vick hit his left thumb on the helmet of teammate Jason Kelce after releasing the ball. It looked bad but he's going to be fine as x-rays on his thumb came back negative, the Eagles announced. Looks like just a bruised thumb.
The x-rays tell us that this isn't a longterm injury, which is great news for Philly. Like most teams, they'd be in big trouble if their starting quarterback went down for an extended period of time.
Vick exited the game after the injury and didn't return. It'll be interesting to see how the Eagles handle him in the preseason moving down the line. Does he see less playing time in the final three preseason games? Does this scare not factor in at all? It'd be make me nervous if I were an Eagles fan.

The one thing every team hopes for in the preseason is to avoid injuries. Michael Vick and the Philadelphia Eagles couldn't do that. Vick injured his left hand on what appeared to be his own teammate's helmet.
Vick took the snap and dropped back to pass, having to step up in the pocket as he felt pressure. When he stepped forward to throw, the ball was released and his hand hit the helmet of teammate Jason Kelce.
He was clearly in pain as he grasped his hand and walked back to the sidelines. Eagles trainer Rick Burkholder was sitting with him on the sidelines, apparently working on the hand.
It's safe to say that Vick's day is done. The good news may be that this happened in the first preseason game and not the last one.
