Berkman has been troubled by knee pain all season long, after having surgery on his right knee three and a half months ago. The veteran flew to Houston on Monday to have his knee examined by the same doctor that performed the surgery, which obviously resulted in some bad news.
Berkman has made just one start since Aug. 3 and has played in just 31 games all season long. The 36-year-old was hitting .263 with two home runs and seven RBIs this season, having attempted to play through the pain following the surgery on his knee.
He played 37 games for the New York Yankees in 2010, following a mid-season trade from Houston. Berkman was considered one of the top players in baseball in 2011 after signing with the Cardinals, hitting .301 with 21 home runs and 94 RBIs with a .959 OPS, his best since the 2006 season.
