Canelo Vs. Lopez Latest Odds

Stay connected with SB Nation

If one wanted to remember just how much of an uphill battle Josesito Lopez has in front of him when he faces Saul "Canelo" Alvarez on Showtime, they only have to look at the current odds for the fight. Lopez is currently a +1000 underdog (meaning if you bet $100 on him, you'd win $1,000) to Alvarez as high as -2000 (you'd have to bet $2000 to win $100).

But you are talking about a guy going up from junior welterweight to junior middleweight to face a superstar. So Lopez's long odds seem correct.

However, this isn't exactly new territory for Lopez. This past June, Josesito was a big underdog to Victor Ortiz. Lopez was coming up from his 140 pound home to 147 to basically serve as a sacrificial lamb on the alter of a Ortiz vs. Canelo pay-per-view superfight.

Lopez fought like hell and was losing the fight on the scorecards, but his attack shattered the jaw of Ortiz and forced the heavy favorite to quit, earning his own shot at Canelo.

But now he's going up to 154 and taking on a much, much bigger man. So can he do it again? That's almost certainly a no.
