Bayern Munich Vs. Mainz, 2012 Bundesliga: Bayern Hold Off Mainz For Win

Stay connected with SB Nation

Bayern Munich made it three wins in three matches on Saturday as they beat Mainz 3-1. The win also propelled them to the top of the table.

Mario Mandzukic continued his stellar form to start this season after just three minutes when he turned in a pass from Thomas Müller to give Bayern the early lead. He nearly doubled the lead just a few minutes later, but Christian Wetklo was up for the save.

The hosts pushed for more goal and basically had their way with Mainz early. Holger Badstuber, playing at left back today, got behind the defense and sent a cross to the middle. Bastian Schweinsteiger made it 2-0 with a flick header that Wetklo couldn't get to in time.

The lead allowed Bayern to slack off on their attack, but they weren't punished for this until the 59th minute. Dante pulled down Julian Baumgartlinger for a penalty that Adam Szalai converted.

With only a goal separating the sides, Bayern came roaring back. Mandzukic almost had a brace but was denied by the post. Mainz pushed out further than they had for the majority of the match which left room for Bayern to attack. Javi Martinez picked up his first assist in a Bayern shirt when Toni Kroos volleyed home the third goal.
