The Phillies wasted a golden opportunity to gain ground in the National League Wild Card race as they got shut out by the Astros, 5-0. Phillies starter Kyle Kendrick gave up a two-run homer in the first to Justin Maxwell and that was all Houston would need, as the Phillies' bats went cold.
Houston starter Dallas Keuchel entered the game 1-7 with a 5.35 ERA. He walked four and gave up five hits in just 5-1/3 innings, but the Phillies couldn't push across any runs.
Philadelphia had no luck against any of the Astros relievers either, as they allowed only two hits over 3-2/3 innings.
Meanwhile, the Astros had no problem adding on to their lead. Jose Altuve reached on a fielder's choice which allowed Jason Castro to score in the 2nd. In the fifth, Brett Wallace doubled home Keuchel to make it 4-0. J.D. Martinez singled home Castro to score the Astros' fifth run in the 6th.
The Phillies are currently 3-1/2 games behind the Cardinals for the second Wild Card spot.
