The first round of the 2012 Tour Championship is officially in the books, and favorites Tiger Woods and Justin Rose each managed to take hold of the 18-hole lead on Thursday after firing rounds of 66.
Woods began his day with birdies on two of his first three holes before bogeying the par-4 fifth, but closed strong with a pair of birdies on holes No. 15 and 16. The 32-year-old Rose got off to a slow start with bogeys on two of his first seven, although picked himself up nicely down the stretch with five birdies over his last 11 holes.
Despite the strong play of Woods and Rose on Thursday, as many as 12 players currently sit under par and within three strokes of the lead. Among the notable names in the middle of the pack all hoping for a bounce-back day on Friday are Phil Mickelson, Rory McIlroy, Bubba Watson and Dustin Johnson, who are each currently 1-under par heading into the second round.
