Southampton Vs. Aston Villa: Final Score 4-1, Saints Pick Up 1st Win

Southampton have their first Premier League points in years thanks to a stirring comeback against Aston Villa at St. Mary's. Despite trailing 1-0 at the break, the hosts managed to score four in a phenomenal second half, with goals from Ricky Lambert, Nathaniel Clyne and Jason Puncheon completing the turnaround.

The first half was fairly evenly matched, but the visitors went ahead after Stephen Ireland volleyed an effort back into the mixer and allowing Darren Bent to steal across and notch his first goal of the season, but a Saints comeback always looked possible, and Ricky Lambert made things happen when he turned past three defenders on the edge of the box and fired in off Brad Guzan, who might have done better.

Clyne hauled Southampton into the lead five minutes later, turning in from near the penalty spot following a mess in the Villa box, and Puncheon made the points safe when he drifted into the area and was for some reason allowed to drive towards Guzan's near post and shoot. Further gloss was added when Emmanuel Mayuka earned a penalty one on one against the goalkeeper, and Lambert stepped up to complete his brace.

After an impressive home win against Swansea City, dropping all three points to Southampton, even away, was hardly what the doctor ordered for Paul Lambert's crew. As for Southampton -- they didn't deserve to be pointless after some of their performances this year, and now they're not. It's a huge result for the Saints.
