Wigan had plenty of flashes of brilliance on Saturday and defended well for much of the match, but Fulham's attackers had too much quality for them on the day. The Cottagers are heading home with three points after a 2-1 victory, thanks to a couple of quality goals.
Hugo Rodellega scored the opener in the 31st minute, heading in a great chipped cross from Dimitar Berbatov. The pair terrorized the Wigan defense for the first half hour of the match, and it felt like only a matter of time before they would score in the minutes leading up to the goal. Just a couple of minutes later, Jordi Gomez nearly equalized for Wigan, but his shot bounced off the crossbar.
Fulham brought on Bryan Ruiz for Alex Kacaniklic in the 59th minute, which proved to be a decisive move. Ruiz set up Damien Duff in the 68th minute with a great pass into space, and the Cottagers' left winger hit a perfect finish.
Wigan fired themselves back into the match late through Arouna Kone, whose hard work and solid play throughout the match was rewarded with a goal on a corner kick. While the home side pushed forward for an equalizer, they never came close, and Fulham held on for the victory.
