Aston Villa are through in the League Cup after pulling off an extra time victory at the City of Manchester Stadium.
Aston Villa have pulled off an impressive upset of Manchester City in the League Cup, downing the Citizens at Eastlands, 4-2 after extra time.
Things went according to plan for City in the early going. Mario Balotelli got a start up top for the Citizens, and he put them ahead in the 27th minute. In the 26th minute, James Milner crossed into the box and he controlled before applying the finish. City would go into the locker room up 1-0 after a fairly tame first half.
The second half was considerably more lively. Aston Villa equalized in the 58th minute though Andreas Weimann, though the goal is likely to go down as a Gareth Barry own goal after the Villa striker's shot went in off the City midfielder. The score didn't stay 1-1 long, with Aleksandar Kolarov firing City back into the lead six minutes later on a free kick.
A further six minutes later, Villa were level once again. On a pretty move, Gabriel Agbonlahor exchanged passes with Christian Benteke before hitting a shot past Costel Pantilimon to make it 2-2 and force extra time. In extra time, the Villains took an improbable lead. Charles N'Zogbia netted what would be the eventual winner, finishing off a rebound after Pantilimon saved a shot by Agbonlahor. In the second period of extra time, Agbonlahor sealed the win with his second goal of the match after 112 minutes.
