Former Cleveland Browns and Baltimore Ravens owner Art Modell has been hospitalized and is reportedly gravely ill.
Art Modell is currently situated in a Baltimore hospital, with indications his situation is deteriorating, WKYC reports. His vital organs are apparently failing. Many members of the Modell family have already begun gathering at the hospital.
Modell is a former NFL owner, taking charge of the Cleveland Browns in 1961 when he purchased the team for $4 million. The Browns would go on to win the 1964 NFL Championship, but they would never reach a Super Bowl while the team was situated in Cleveland.
After a contentious move to Baltimore in the 1996 NFL offseason that resulted in much public outcry from the city of Cleveland and the NFL community, Modell would finally become a championship winner, as the Ravens earned a Super Bowl ring at the conclusion of the 2000-01 season. Modell would eventually step down and sell the team to minority owner Steve Bisciotti in 2003.
