New Carolina Panthers general manager Dave Gettleman commented on head coach Ron Rivera and his plans for building a talented roster at his introductory press conference Tuesday.

The Carolina Panthers made the hiring of Dave Gettleman official Tuesday, as the team held a press conference to introduce their new general manager.

Gettleman, who previously worked with the New York Giants as a senior pro personnel analyst, was hired to replace Marty Hurney, who was fired earlier this season after the Panthers started 1-5.

The new general manager made it clear at his press conference that he doesn't plan to make any immediate changes, and head coach Ron Rivera's job is safe for the time being. Gettleman referenced a recent conversation he had with Rivera, showing his desire to work with the coach:

"If you and I do this right, we'll be hoisting a trophy with (team owner Jerry) Richardson."

Gettleman's first task on the job will be hiring a new offensive coordinator to replace Rob Chudzinski, who left to take the head coaching job with the Cleveland Browns. Gettleman will work with Rivera to make the hire, telling the head coach, "I don't have a list of coaches in my back pocket."

Gettleman wouldn't give a firm comment on the Panthers' financial situation, but he did mention the importance of building through the draft, as opposed to signing high-priced free agents.

What do Carolina fans think of the hire? Over at Cat Scratch Reader, SB Nation's Panthers blog, they seem to be optimistic:

This is a man who has been desiring a chance, and he discussed his need to "leave a legacy". Hopefully this will take the form of great success, and trophies in Carolina's future.
