You know what gets people out to the ballpark? The promise of free, creme-filled sugar cakes. One minor league California baseball team is really plumbing the depths of "quirky minor league baseball promotions" this coming season.
The Inland Empire 66ers proclaimed today that Friday, April 5, 2013 will be Farewell to Twinkies Night on the heels of the announcement that Hostess looks to be shutting down their operations, which would mean the end of one of America's most beloved snacks. Fans of the 66ers will have the opportunity to enjoy one last Twinkie on Farewell to Twinkies Night.
The first 999 fans in attendance will receive a free Twinkie; however there will be a silent auction for the final Twinkie to be awarded during the seventh inning stretch with proceeds going to charity.
So wait, they're giving out free Twinkies but holding an auction for the last free Twinkie? Minor league baseball, everybody!
BUT WAIT; THAT'S NOT ALL!
The organization has also extended an offer to actor Woody Harrelson, who in 2009, starred as the Twinkie obsessed Tallahassee in the zombie comedy, Zombieland, to throw out the ceremonial first pitch. Beyond the invitation to Harrelson, the 66ers have also contacted Hostess about featuring Twinkie the Kid, Hostess's well known mascot, in the Mascot Dash vs. the team's own Bernie.
