There is new evidence in the case against Oscar Pistorius, who was charged with murdering his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, last Thursday. Police have indicated a bloodied cricket bat is now central to their investigation, according to a report.

There is apparently new evidence in the case of former Olympian Oscar Pistorius, charged on Friday in the murder of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp. Via the City Press:

A bloodied cricket bat is the central piece of evidence in the unfolding murder investigation into Reeva Steenkamp's death.

City Press can reveal that police are investigating different scenarios involving the bat - one of which is that her boyfriend, Olympic hero Oscar Pistorius, used it to viciously assault her.

Prosecutors have indicated they will pursue a premeditated murder charge against Pistorius, who allegedly killed Steenkamp on Thursday at Pistorius' home in Pretoria. Steenkamp was shot multiple times, but as the City Press article now notes, the bloodied cricket bat adds more layers to the story.

The police, who have maintained from the start that this was not an accidental death, have several theories to how the bloodied bat plays into the investigation, from Pistorius using it as the murder weapon to Steenkamp attempting to use the bat in self-defense.

Pistorius is currently being detained at the Brooklyn Police Station in Pretoria, and will apply for bail on Tuesday. He has vehemently denied murdering Steenkamp, insisting he mistook his girlfriend for an intruder.
