Withers Stakes 2013 Results: Revolutionary Closes Hard For The Win

Brian Spurlock-US PRESSWIRE

Todd Pletcher's Revolutionary came from the back of the back inside the final quarter mile to win the Grade 3 Withers Stakes at Aqueduct, establishing the colt as a major contender for the 2013 Kentucky Derby.

Revolutionary, sent to post as the odds-on favorite at 3/4, made a huge late move from the back of the pack to sweep by Escapefromreality and Siete de Oros in the final strides to win the Grade 3 Withers Stakes at Aqueduct.

Valid, part of the Darely entry, went to his nose as he was breaking from the starting gate, ending his chances before the race even began. Revolutionary showed little in the way of early speed and was content to sit well back of the leaders down the backstretch. At the top of the lane, Escapefromreality engaged pacesetter Siete de Oros, dueling eachother through most of the stretch. Escapefromreality put away Siete de Oros just inside the final furlong and looked to be in position to roll to the finish, but Revolutionary split the leaders with a powerful late kick and grabbed victory from the jaws of defeat.

Escapefromreality held on to finish second, while Siete de Oros rounded out the trifecta.

As a result of the Withers, Revolutionary earns 10 points towards a place in the starting gate for the 2013 Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs.

Revolutionary is a three-year-old colt by War Pass out of an A.P. Indy mare (Runup the Colors), trained by Todd Pletcher and ridden by Javier Castellano.
