The New Jersey Devils broke a franchise record tonight. It wasn't a good one.
Winnipeg Jets captain Andrew Ladd walked in and scored in the first eight seconds of the game on Wednesday night, breaking a Devils record for quickest goal-against that had stood for more than 20 years.
Pretty sure that when the Capitals' Yvon Corriveau scored just ten seconds in against the Devils in 1990, he figured that record wouldn't be broken. But the Devils were completely flummoxed off the opening faceoff when the puck suddenly fluttered over the neutral zone and left Ladd wide open. Credit to Ladd, though, for the sweet backhand to beat Johan Hedberg. The Devils have buckled down defensively, as no goals have been scored since then.
