The Los Angeles Kings added some needed size to the blue line with the acquisition of defenseman Keaton Ellerby from Florida.

The Los Angeles Kings have acquired defenseman Keaton Ellerby from the Florida Panthers, in exchange for a fifth-round draft pick in the 2013 NHL draft, the team announced on Friday.

The 24-year old defenseman, drafted No. 10 overall by Florida in the 2007 draft, played in 40 games for the Panthers in 2011-2012 and in 54 games the season prior. In 116 NHL games with the Panthers, Ellerby has two goals and 15 assists and 34 penalty minutes.

The young defenseman is known primarily as a physical third pairing defenseman, and had been averaging around 15 minutes of ice time for Florida this season in nine games. At 6-5, 217 the blueliner will help provide size to a Kings defensive group in need of a bit more substance and grit.

The Kings have started the season 3-4-2 and have struggled to start the season a year after winning the Stanley Cup, scoring just over two goals-per contest in nine games.
