Jets rumors: Brandon Gibson generates 'serious' interest

The New York Jets are making a strong push for free agent wide receiver Brandon Gibson.

The New York Jets have "serious" interest in Brandon Gibson and plan to make a run at signing the free agent wide receiver, according to Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News.

The Jets had one of the NFL's worst passing games in 2012, ranking 30th in the league with an average of 180.7 yards per game through the air. New York's 14 receiving touchdowns ranked 29th, and the team's 6.4 yards per catch was good for a tie for 28th. Obviously, the inept quarterback situation, featuring Mark Sanchez, Tim Tebow and Greg McElroy, had a lot to do with those numbers, but the Jets receiving corps wasn't exactly stellar. Jeremy Kerley led the team with 56 receptions and 827 yards, and no other player had more than 30 receptions or 360 yards.

Gibson didn't have a breakout year in 2012, but he was solid, compiling 51 catches for 691 yards and five touchdowns. The St. Louis Rams' attack through the air was balanced, as four players had at least 519 receiving yards, and no one had more than 698. Without a ton of talent around him, Gibson could provide much bigger numbers for New York.

The four-year veteran out of Washington State isn't the only receiver garnering the Jets' interest. The team is looking at former Browns wideout Mohamed Massaquoi, according to ESPN's Rich Cimini. Massaquoi didn't come close to matching Gibson's numbers last year, as he had 17 catches for 254 yards in nine games. However, he could be a cheap option.

Cheap is good, but the Jets may be wise to focus on talent.
