Andrew Bynum injury: 76ers' center to have season-ending surgery

Howard Smith-USA TODAY Sports

Andrew Bynum's season is officially over. The 76ers' center will have surgery on both knees Tuesday, raising questions about his future in Philadelphia.

The disastrous Andrew Bynum saga has taken a turn for the worse. Any hope that the Philadelphia 76ers' center would play in 2012-13 has been erased, as Bynum will undergo season-ending surgery on both his knees Tuesday, according to Philadelphia sports radio host Howard Eskin. Yahoo! Sports' Adrian Wojnarowski and the 76ers have confirmed the news.

This ends a year-long saga that saw a seemingly routine summer procedure turn into a serious injury. Bynum had an Orthokine procedure in September and was expected to return for the start of the season, but his timetable kept getting pushed back. Questions persisted as we reached mid-November until the 76ers' center admitted he suffered a setback in his left knee due to a bowling accident. Bynum has occasionally practiced since then, but never seriously enough to return.

Bynum's season-ending surgery raises questions about his future with the team. Acquired in the four-team Dwight Howard trade last summer, Bynum is an impending free agent and is expected to garner a high price tag despite his injuries. Will the 76ers roll the dice on a big long-term contract, or let him go and risk losing him for nothing?
