Toronto Maple Leafs forward Joffrey Lupul has been suspended two games for his illegal hit to the head of Victor Hedman.
Toronto Maple Leafs forward Joffrey Lupul has been suspended two games by the NHL's Department of Player Safety for his hit on Tampa Bay Lightning defenseman Victor Hedman on Wednesday night.
The hit came in the opening minute of the third period when Hedman was skating the puck through the neutral zone. Lupul's hit appeared to target Hedman's head.
Hedman remained on the ice dazed for a few moments but ultimately managed to finish the game. Lupul was given a two-minute minor for illegal hit to the head.
In the Department of Player Safety's video, Rob Blake references that the principal point of contact of Lupul's hit was determined to be Hedman's head. This is what earned him the two-game suspension, as the Department of Player Safety has made it clear that it do not want players targeting the head when finishing their checks.
Lupul's clean history and Hedman's ability to finish the game were other points made in the video.
In the two games Lupul has played since returning from a broken forearm, he has recorded three goals and an assist.
