Some of the bigger names on the PGA Tour struggled in the first round of the Shell Houston Open at Redstone Golf Club Tournament Course in Humble, Texas, on Thursday. Most notably, Rory McIlroy posted a 1-over round of 73, putting him in a tie for 88th place with golfers such as Steve Stricker and Geoff Ogilvy.
McIlroy's round included three bogeys and a double bogey.
D.A. Points, after shooting an 8-under 64, is sitting alone atop the leaderboard, a shot above John Rollins and Cameron Tringale. After three birdies on the front nine, Points rattled off five consecutive birdies to start the back nine, grabbing one more at the 17th hole to put himself above the rest of the field.
Other notable finishes include Phil Mickelson, who shot an even-par 72, Keegan Bradley and Louis Oosthuizen at 2-under, Dustin Johnson at 3-under, Lee Westwood at 4-under and Angel Cabrera and Jason Kokrak tied for third place at 6-under.
