It really seems like these sorts of egregious boarding or checking from behind calls are being made more and more often as the NHL season progresses. The latest one on Sunday night might just be the worst of the season.
New York Rangers center Brad Richards was injured badly when Buffalo Sabres forward Patrick Kaleta shoved him head-first into the boards. It really was an uncomfortable scene, as Richards immediately threw off his gloves and laid motionless on the ice with a severe grimace on his face. He was clearly in a world of pain, but left the ice under his own power. Kaleta was immediately given a five-minute major for checking from behind and a game misconduct. Brendan Shanahan will want to have a word with him tomorrow.
Meanwhile, the play sparked the listless Rangers offense. Given a 5 minute power play, the Rangers immediately scored two goals to take the lead.
