Marc Staal injury: Rangers defenseman likely out for remainder of first-round

Bruce Bennett

Marc Staal updated his status for the Eastern Conference Quarterfinal on Friday afternoon.

New York Rangers defenseman Marc Staal will not be available to play in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinal on Friday night due to issues related to his orbital bone fracture from earlier this season.

Staal returned to action for Game 3 after missing two months due to the injury. He compiled 17:17 of ice time over 21 shifts in the contest. However, he was unable to play in Game 4 and stated on Friday that he likely won't be available to play in the remainder of the series.

Staal was unwilling to go into the specifics of what was keeping him out of the lineup. He stated nothing out of the ordinary occurred during Game 3 and he didn't determine until the morning of Game 4 that he wouldn't be able to play.

Prior to his return, Staal discussed that his eyesight had not fully returned to normal. His peripheral vision was also identified as an issue.

Staal originally sustained the injury after being struck in the face by a deflected shot against the Philadelphia Flyers on March 5. He was not wearing a visor at the time. During his return in Game 3, Staal was wearing a large visor that covered a majority of his face.
